Download speeds lately have really been pathetic, so . . . Spent hours on the phone and email with Verizon tech. support last night. I think I virtually rebuilt Windows, as I was foolish enough to humor them and try EVERYTHING they suggested. Yes, I was up long past midnight. Anyway, when Verizon was FINALLY convinced that there was nothing wrong with my hardware or software . . . I was told that it might be a GSP problem. Funny how it took Verizon so long to discover the GSP problem, when it has apparently existed for weeks. I had signed up with (GTEI?) as a GSP when the account was activated. I was informed that GTEI was now Genuity. So I got a temporary Qwest GSP user/password today and ran some tests on DSLreports, using my own (Genuity GSP) account, and the temp. (Qwest GSP) account. First round of tests was about 1730 today. I ran all three speed test servers in both Windows 98 SE and linux RedHat 7 on both accounts (12 speed tests total). I saw (virtually) no difference between Genuity and Qwest. The average speed was within 10%, and both had max. speeds rated as 8X modem speed, which is not unreasonable for a 640/90 ADSL connection. However . . . I ran the same exact tests just a few minutes ago (high traffic time for the Internet). The difference -now- is quite significant. The temp. Qwest account results were virtually unchanged from when I ran the tests at 1730. But the Genuity GSP account results (my own account) showed that my download speed had decreased to as low as regular dial-up modem speed. (~60K download AND upload, with ~6K data throughput) In other words, Verizon Infospeed with Genuity GSP really sucks, at the moment . . . at least in Central Mass. -Dave
