A useful post setting out special problems associated with cellphones prompts me to share the following. Normal telphones, as that post notes, have standardised technology - all over the world, in fact. Because of the importance of telephones it is useful for the hearing-impaired to have some understanding of this technology. There is a remarkable book which has helped many in this area. It is by Fike and Friend, called Understanding Telephone Electronics and was originally published by Texas Instruments. A version has also been reprinted by Newnes (but with one Bigelow's name on the cover - don't worry - the original Fike and Friend material still comprises the bulk of the book). With a light touch, even humour, it carries the reader through the early evolution of the telephone, the problems needing to be resolved and how this was done. Somehow you are carried along up to, and through, the piece of hardware called an induction coil and are left entertained, informed and with an understanding of how a phone works - including the all-important voice circuit. It has helped me and, on basic telephone technology for the layperson, I recommend it.
