Has anyone had any experiences with either the Sonnet or Newer Tech cards? Especially the ones that have the pass through slot to allow the HPV Card to be still used? I am considering getting one for my 7100 since they are relatively cheap. I've maxed out the Ram and the Cache in that machine and even with OS9, it's still a little sluggish. Let me know if anyone has any ideas or suggestions?? Thanks, Paul

If you've maxed out L2 cache (1 M , it might not be worth it to get a G3 upgrade, since it makes the cache worthless. Dumping OS 9 in favor of 8.6 might improve performance.

Hi Paul, I think there are too many architectural limitations that the PMac 7100 logic board has which will soon become a hindrance to AV apps. Casual AV work is OK. I have experience upgrading with Sonnet G3 NuBus cards and PDS and NuBus video in general for DTP. I'd recommend you getting a PMac 7600 and newer for any serious AV work. PMac 7100/66 has BIOS (ROM DIMM) limitations to 2GB HD partitions, 7100/80 are known good up to 9GB HDs. PMac 7100s logic board use SCSI-1 chipset, limited to 5MB/sec transfer rates. For any AV work, need a NuBus fast and wide SCSI-2 controller (20MB/sec max), FWB Jackhammer and ATTO are legacy NuBus boards of choice. Mate it to a big, fast and wide Quantum Atlas drive. The 7100/AV PDS video board does not have the latest MPEG-2 compression chips, which makes it slow, files large, and cannot compress efficiently on the fly. PMac 7100/66 NuBus speed is slow 16MHz and block mode transfer, PMac 7100/80 has 20MHz NuBus speed and support fast block mode transfer up to 20MB/sec, rated max. For snappy true color video performance, use as a minimum SuperMac Thunder NuBus video boards which have excellent and fastest QuickDraw accelerator chipsets. Make sure you have the Control Panels. Your two available NuBus slots are used up; your dummy AV board occupies the 3rd and last NuBus slot. Soon will need 100MHz NuBus ethernet boards
